Bali or the Maldives? Choosing your honeymoon island

It’s the question we hear most from newly engaged couples. Both are stunning, both are romantic, and both are reachable from India. But they offer very different honeymoons.

The short answer

Choose the Maldives if you want complete seclusion, crystal-clear water and a holiday where the biggest decision is snorkel or spa. Choose Bali if you want variety — culture, temples, rice terraces, waterfalls and beaches — and enjoy exploring.

Getting there

The Maldives is extraordinarily close: under two hours from Chennai to Malé, then a speedboat or seaplane to your resort. Bali usually involves a connection via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok, so expect most of a day in transit.

What you’ll do

In the Maldives, the resort is the destination. Days revolve around the lagoon, the house reef, sunset cruises and private dinners. In Bali you will move between areas — perhaps Ubud’s jungle and the southern beaches — with temple visits, cultural shows, cafés and day trips.

Budget

Bali offers remarkable value: a private pool villa can cost less than a standard room elsewhere. In the Maldives, the resort, villa type, meal plan and transfer method (seaplanes cost more) drive the price — and since all meals are at the resort, a half-board or full-board plan is often wiser.

Best time to go

  • Maldives: November to April is the drier season; May to October is greener with better deals.
  • Bali: April to October is dry; November to March brings tropical rain but fewer crowds.

Why not both?

Couples with 9–10 days often combine the two — Bali first for adventure, then the Maldives to unwind. It needs careful flight planning, which is exactly what we do.
